4 year old Adrian spies a shiny red fire truck in his playmate’s hand. After a quick glance over his shoulder to locate the nearby adults, he pinches his friend, hard. Squalling, the other child wallops Adrian over the head with the truck leaving behind not only a red welt but an indignantly wailing Adrian.

Betrayed
I recently read an article on homeschooling that I thought was a must-read for all Christian parents. Although the article dealt with some of the weaknesses of the homeschooling model, it took a breathtakingly honest look at what it means to be a Christian parent.

Pride
I recently reread Mere Christianity. It's an old favorite-the kind of book that the first time you read it you are stunned by its simplicity, but when you have read it once a year for 20 years you'll still find something new. I suppose that the book that best embodies this phenomenon is the Bible, but all the great books reflect a little bit of that quality. Lewis isn't getting deeper, and the Bible certainly isn't changing, but I am. And a year's growth in me brings a clearer vision of the author's words. This year I was struck by the chapter on pride.

How Will You Be Known?
I have been known as many things in my life. When I was a child, I was my father's daughter. As a teenager, I was that bushy haired girl. As a newlywed in my husband's hometown, I was his wife. Now I am most often known as my kids' mom. Since I want to be the best wife and mother I can, I don't let it bother me that I lose my identity somewhat in my family. After all, there are worse things to be known as. For instance, how would you like to be known as the troublemaker in the church? The woman whose fight with another woman was known by the whole congregation?

Rachel and Leah: Pieces in a Game
Want to hear a story? Once there was a plain, near-sighted matron who lived right beside her beautiful younger sister. The younger sister had married her first love, the first boy she'd ever kissed. It was love at first sight and her much older husband had been outrageous in his pursuit of her. The matron's husband on the other hand was never fond of her. Their large and healthy brood seemed to bring her immense joy. The younger sister was infertile and it was source of conflict in her marriage. Sound like the start of a novel to you? What if I told you that their husband was the same guy? What a great episode of Jerry Springer that would be!
